I guess I need to start by stating that I feel coaching volleyball is not what I do, but in many ways, is who I am.I guess a brief personal history is a good place to start. I have been happily married to Jacqui for over 27 years. We are the proud parents of 3 beautiful young women, Kiyoko, Tamiko and Mariko. Two of my daughters, Tamiko and Mariko played high school and club volleyball on teams that I coached. It was awesome to be able to coach my own daughters – at least most of the time! I am grateful for the love and understanding my family has shown by allowing me the freedom and times to pursue my coaching career.I never played volleyball – in fact, never saw a game until I was in my early 30’s. I fell in love with the sport, learned how to play a little, attended numerous clinics, volunteered to work at various college camps and learned about the game and how to teach the skills required. Now, 20 something years later, coaching volleyball is an important part of my life. Being in the gym is the best part of my work day. Many of my friends are from the “volleyball family”.As to team philosophy, its pretty simple – work hard, practice hard, play hard, never quit, never give up - be a great teammate and enjoy every second you’re on the court. Play every play like it could be the last play of your career. No play is too tough to make, no ball to far to pursue, no goal unattainable. The game is and should be about the players and not the coaches or parents. Great players make me look like a much better coach.I find it true that the harder players work the better they are as a team and also there is a strong connection between good luck and hard work. Teams and players that work hard usually are way luckier then teams and players that don’t. I am proud of many of the accomplishments that teams I’ve coached have attained. At Deer Valley the boys and girls teams have never had a losing season. The girls at Deer Valley have qualified for NCS playoffs 12 consecutive years. The boys have only missed the playoffs once in the past 12 years. While at Antioch High we won NCS in 1995 and 96.In 1998 the North Coast Section recognized my high school teams accomplishments by awarding me NCS Boys Volleyball Honor Coach.
