Manguiat, Jeannine (Boys) 14 Black
I am going into my 19th year playing and/or coaching volleyball.  Since I am only 27 years old, you can see that volleyball has been a huge part of my life, and something I have committed a lot of time to.  Aside from volleyball, I was an elementary teacher for six years, and am now an elementary school vice principal.  I earned my California teaching credential and Masters Degree in Urban Education from Holy Names University in Oakland.  I earned my Administrative Services Credential through California State University, East Bay.  I believe that my experience and preparation as an educator has equipped me to be a more effective coach.  Each year that I continue to play and coach volleyball I fall more in love with the sport and enjoy learning more about it.

I was a 4 year varsity player at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland where I played as a middle blocker.  While I was there we won the NCS division 1 championship in 1999; won the HAAL league championship in 1998 and 1999; and I was an all-league selection in 1998, 1999, and 2000.  I also played 7 years of club volleyball in the Bay Area as a middle blocker and outside hitter where I competed in the USA Junior Olympic Championships in 1997, 1998, and 1999.  I went on to play 4 years at Westmont College in Santa Barbara as a defensive specialist.  While I was there we qualified to play in the NAIA National Tournament in 2001 and 2002.  In 2001 we finished in the “Elite Eight.”

I began coaching for Diablo Valley while I was home during the summers in college, beginning in 2003.  I have coached for both the boys and girls program at a variety of age levels.  Most recently, for the boys program, I have coached the 18-Raiders team in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010 and the 17-Raiders team in 2009.

My coaching style is one that begins with a large focus and emphasis on good fundamentals—regardless of the age or experience of the players.  I believe that solid fundamentals are crucial for the development of individuals and of teams.  Once the fundamentals are established, I work with my players to be aggressive in all aspects of the game, rather than maintaining status-quo.  Although I do put a strong emphasis on team development, I feel that one of my strengths as a coach is on individual player development throughout the season.  This is achieved by constant and consistent feedback to my players through both practices and tournaments.  This constant feedback is a large part of my coaching personality.

I believe that I have high expectations of my players.  I expect that they are committed to their team (including practice/tournament focus and attendance) and that they are committed to improving individually, which in turn helps their team.  My practices are high energy/intensity and require players to work hard all throughout.  Finally, I expect my players to respect their teammates, respect me, and respect Diablo.
