Volleyball has been a large part of my life for more than half of my years.  I started as the team manager for the middle school girls’ team and the end is not in sight.  Below I will lay out my playing and coaching experience.  Before that, I’d like to share some of my philosophy of coaching and of volleyball.

My philosophy regarding coaching is an evolving process that gets refined every year that I experience.  But, I believe that coaching serves as an important role in the lives of children.  We stand as an authority figure outside the home; therefore, we have influence over some development of the children.  This is a tremendous responsibility that I do not take lightly.  Coaches influence players in respect to integrity, responsibility, honesty, teamwork, discipline, self-motivation, self-reliance, and goal-setting.  These values help develop the child into a wonderful, contributing, adult.

My philosophy regarding strategy, this year, will be determined the first few weeks of practice.  After evaluating the team, I will have a better idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the team.  From this I can determine where our focus should be.  For sure, I will stress the importance of receiving serve and serving.  These skills are undervalued and can win matches alone. I’ve been playing volleyball for 21 years.  My boys’ team experience began in high school at Liberty High in Brentwood.  There, I played varsity for 3 years, making All-league 1st team (Senior) and 2nd team (Junior).  My sophomore year, I played in my first doubles grass tournament.  After High School, I played in the Marine Corps for the local base team.  Once back from the military, I played for Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.  I played for LMC for a few years receiving League MVP honors in my final year.  My most recent college playing experience was for the San Francisco State University team as setter/RS; again making All-League honors.  I have played in adult leagues since and have refereed some also (which is why I get angry at poor refereeing).  In my playing time, I have held each court position, with more experience in setting and the right-side.

My coaching began 11 years ago.  I coached girls for three years at East Bay Jrs.  For eight years now, I’ve coached for Diablo Valley Volleyball Club, leading both boys and girls.  In addition, I performed as an Assistant Coach to the Northern California High Performance team, in 2007, which travelled to Europe.  I have coached at the summer clinics for Diablo Valley for 5 years.  In addition to coaching high school kids, in 2011 I completed my first season as the Head Coach of the St. Mary’s College Men’s Volleyball Team, losing in the Silver Bracket at the NCVF National Tournament.

Outside of coaching, I own and operate my own business, Aristotle Fitness, as a personal trainer.  As you might guess, working in this arena gives me another perspective into the game of volleyball.  My eyes see the limitations that exist when an athlete is deficient in their strength or coordination.  On the flip side, I see the wonderful potential a player might have based on how they move and control their body.  With this in my back pocket, I train the girls according to what they need to excel on the volleyball court.
